I am a member of the Search and Recovery Metal Detecting Club in Kingsport. We meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Kingsport Library at 5:45 pm. We had a club outing this past Saturday and hunted J. Fred Park and Bordon Park. There was about 8 of us and about 50 coins was found in all. A couple of silver dimes was found and a few wheat pennys.

I get the geocaching newsletter online but have yet to hunt for any of the caches. I have a gps but haven't used it to hunt yet.

Tell us your experiences at metal detecting or geocaching.

We bought a metal detector from Wal*Mart for 99 bucks, and we didnt ever find anything !! well we really didnt know how !!

there is a learning curve to using a metal detector. You need to read your manual and understand your machine and do a lot of practice with different objects so you will recognize the settings on your particular machine. I think the $99 one has a meter on it with numbers. Certain metals register with certain numbers. It pays to carry the pocket manual with you the first few times you go so you have a ready reference. The main theme is, "When in doubt, dig it out" Dirt fishing is a great hobby and the only one I know where you usually come home with more money than you left with. you'll figure it out soon. My 16 yr old loves it and I helped to find my next door neighbors ring he dropped in the lawn.. my best find but I had to give it back.. darn it

Stacy, I find that that is more fun than finding coins and stuff when you can find something important for someone and return it to them. Most of the time the look on their face and in their eyes is more valuable than the item itself. Of course I like to find silver coins also, that gets your heart to thumping when you see that silver shining. Happy Hunting and Happy Camping................... etncc/i love camping.png

we have now lost the manual.... i guess we might get another one sometime...

If it was one of the pioneers that Walmart sells you can go on line and get the manual for it. I believe it is http://detecting.com and look for the manual for the Bounty Hunter which the Pioneers are sisters too. Example Quickdraw II is the Pioneer 202. We are looking for a place to metal detect, thinking of trying a couple of old school playgrounds.
