I have read on some of the other forums that a lot of popup owners
will use a oscillating ceramic heater instead of the propane furance
when cold weather camping.
The reason being: When you pay for your campsite, the electric is included
why waste the propane when you can heat for free.
Does anyone have any experience with this or any comments?
Thanks for your response.

we use one or two elecric heaters plus run our heat strip on the a/c unit. The thought of gas going when we sleep scares me so we have never turned on our gas for the camper. I am with you I will use their Electic, but when we went to Little River for Halloween last yr we had our breakers trip from the heaters so we had to run one to the main box with an extention cord

We use electric heaters, at campsites were we have the power.
Our unit has gas detectors, But I leave a window open slightly. Just in case.
Be careful about pointing the electric heaters away from anything the will burn. We had a motor home and someone pointed our heater toward the bed. When I found it , the heaters was about 1 foot away, but it still scorched the edges. Thank God everything was Ok but it was scary. So now we watch the grandkids, and pets.

Thanks for the info. We went to Walmart and bought a Holmes 1500 watt oscillating ceramic heater and a 25' 14 guage extension cord. We will try it on our next trip. We are also thinking about buying a heated mattress pad.
We are looking to upgrade to a TT but will have to make the pup work til we do so.

We have used the propne heater before but we also carry a small elec. heater with us. It works out pretty good except when the power goes out.

i prefer the electric because you have paid for the electricty so why not use it

I know of some that use the oil-filled electric heaters, but they don't circulate the air as well as the rotating ceramics. Be very careful though, as Riverside says - someone can bump them and they'll get too close to a flammable surface.

If there's ample electrical power, an electric blanket is a good solution for sleeping; keeps the heat where you need it, and the ceramic can be kept away from blankets, etc. and pointed toward the plumbing instead.

A heat lamp (flood lamp style bulb) pointed toward the plumbing is often enough, and the wattage is considerably less than a ceramic also.

I save the propane for power failures & hot water, even with CO detectors I still feel like there's some risk. I'm probably too cautious though, there is likely a lot of built in safety in those furnaces.

We used ceramic heaters (electric) when we had our pop-up, but we never had a propane heater with it so we were limited on choices. A single ceramic always did a very nice job. We always brought two ceramic heaters just in case one wasn't good enough.

Anyone know what would be a good size ceramic heater? I am almost afraid of the little elec heater we have and don't have a ceramic one. Where is a good place to look at them and maybe purchase one?

Wal-Mart has a large selection. I just have a small one that I use but I also have strip heat in A/C. etncc/i love camping.png

We bought a 1500 watt Holmes oscillating ceramic heater from Walmart. We used it this weekend and it worked great. The outside temp was in the high 40's we used it on the low setting and popup stayed warm. The heater case is also cool to the touch which made us feel more comfortable using it.

Well, we went and bought us a small ceramic heater. Got the heat strip checked out and the camper is almost ready to go. Just hope the weather holds out for us to have some good days....

We don't have a furnace but 2 holmes ceramic heaters we bought end of winter clearance at target for $10.00 for both. We used one once in the spring and decided to take both to little river last weekend, so we plugged in the one we had not used yet first while playing cards in pup. Well in a few minutes the heater popped and sparks flew out of it, so we are leary of sleeping with one on now.

The best thing I have found with my Pop-up is to put an electric blanket "under" a blanket and sheet but on top of the mattress. Then the strip heat alone will keep you comfortable down to about 35 degrees. etncc/new.gif

In the springtime, I find the heat strip on the ac unit to be plenty to knock the chill off. In the winter, when it's cold, I use the propane because it puts out lots of nice warm air. If it's not so cold I use the heat strip on the ac unit and a small electric space heater. The fan on the heat strip really helps get the heat from the propane furnace out into the bunk ends.
