Our camper has a huge air conditioner on the roof that is not original with the camper. It is way too big for the camper and makes it difficult to fold up and down. It also makes the camper hard to level and the door fit correctly. Since we don't plan to camp in the summer we were thinking about taking the air conditioner off and trying to cover up the hole and seal it good. Does anyone have any suggestions about what we could use to cover the hole and seal it with? I suggested a sky light, but my husband didn't think that was a good idea (lol). It is so heavy that he has to hold it up for me to get the canvas pushed in the sides and it is a big strain on his back. We sure don't need a back injury.

How big is the hole? The best way I have seen to put in AC in a pop up is to get a aftermarket door for the side and make a sliding table for it to slide through. I have seen a few like that since I fixed my camper like that. Do you have pictures? If it was mine here is what I would do if it is too big for a roof vent. I would make a frame that is the size of the opening. Then I would get a aluminum sheet bigger than it is for the hole. I would bend back over each side to give it a extra bit of firmness. I would make it to were it had at least 1 inch extra all the way around. I would put it over the hole but run a line of window putty around the opening . This is the stuff used between the windows and aluminum siding. Then I would screw the new piece down and into the roof and new wood. After that is done I would caulk it with a good caulk that is not silicone. There is a good kind I used last but I don't remember what it was. Then I would use a good elastometric roof coating and not the black tar goop. That tar goop causes you more problems down the road, I had to fix the problems caused by it. If you head out towards McMinnville Give me a yell. I can show you a whole lot better than I can tell you. You don't even have to bring your camper, I think I can show you how to do it using mine as a model. I sealed a few "problems" this way and it has worked great. I found this way out from people who restore these vintage campers as a hobby and as a living.

I believe most, if not all, rooftop AC units use the same rough opening as a roof vent (14"x14"). Since yours isn't original, this may not be the case, but I'd still be surprised if it's not. That said, probably the "best" solution would be to remove the AC and replace it with a powered roof vent (Fantastic Fan or similar brand). If your AC unit is still in good condition, you should be able to sell it for more than what you will spend on a fan.

Thanks for the great ideas. We will probably install a fan. My husband thinks there might have been something like that to begin with and the previous owner replaced it with this huge air conditioner. We won't be camping hot weather anyway. We have too much yardwork and gardening in the summer to take a weekend off.

If you need a camper roof vent with a fan keep an eye open at Camping world over by Opryland Mills. I got one awhile back there with a fan for only 35 bucks. They also have the big covers for about 25. If you have never been its easy to get to. If I remember correctly you take a right in front of where the Opryland Hotel entrance is . The first time I went ot it I thought I took a wrong turn. You pass everything and then nothing. Then a little ways down you see a Yogi bear campground and then Cullem Maxey. Thats a good place also for parts . Then a little ways down its camping world. On a side note I was out by your area of the county tonight. I hardly ever go that way anymore. I came through Temperance Hall and Snows Hill area. I am presenting a class for a church at a Place called Lancaster. Its out by the Dam. I just go through Silverpoint after work to this place and cut through Temperence hall to come home.

Thanks for the information. We have been to Opry Mills several times. We like Bass Pro Shop. My husband's sister lives in Hermitage and it is not far from her house. We will definitely go down and check out the vent fans. That is in our price range. My husband is pretty handy so he can switch them out. I think we will wait until the Christmas madness is over. There are days in January and February that we need somewhere to go anyway to get out of the house. I know exactly where Temperance Hall is. My husband's dad was a United Methodist minister so he has lived all over Middle Tennessee. They are originally from Smith County so he is familiar with all of that area. You should stop by sometime. We are right on the highway down from the old drive in. I am almost positive I was in your wife's class in school. Anyway, thanks again for the information. I know taking that unit off will make a big difference in folding and unfolding the camper.

Who was your husbands dad? You ever know of Bratten and Faye Tucker? They are friends of mine, their house is not far from me. I was doing the class at the Lancaster Methodist Church. I am a certified lay speaker in that denomination.

He was Marvin Napier. He preached for over 40 years and retired here. He passed away 6 years ago. We go to Elizabeth Chapel.
