We just returned from a really great weekend at Natural Tunnel State Park.
I can't believe that I have not heard more about this campground! What a jewel!
I would highly recommend this campground.. and I am sure we will return many times. It is about 20 miles north of Kingsport (took us a little over an hour and 1/4 tank of gas one way from our house in the NE Corner of Bristol TN/VA.

This is a very small campground. 18 sites and 1 group camping area
It also has 3 tent sites.

One of the things we loved about this campground is the amount of greenspace between sites. The fire ring is set a distance away from the pad. There was also plenty of room to put up our large screenhouse, with plenty of room from the kids to play. The sites are gravel and the roads that run crossways are gravel. However, the main loop is blacktop. There is a playground on the hill as well as one over by the ampitheater/pool. The bathhouse was always clean. There is a huge field next to the campground with a volleyball net set up plus ample room to play soccer, etc. There is also a hiking trail that starts from there. Some of the sites also have an incredible view of the mountains. I really liked how small the campground is. The kids could bike, etc and you could easily see them. There is no sewer but the dump is close. Forgot, there is also a horshoe pit.

The park itself is really pretty. There is the tunnel itself and the chairlift. Last night was one of the nights that they lit the tunnel and you could ride the chairlift down for live entertainment.

Also, there are plenty of hiking trails. And, a great swimming pool in season as well as an ampitheater. They also offer hayrides. There is also a blockhouse
to visit.

This campground does take reservations. However, it is "first come first serve" for picking your spot..so we may go on thursday next time instead of friday.

We were told that they would be putting in some new larger sites next year down the hill. A 36 1/2' 5th wheel came in after us and had to take the only spot left, which was one of the smaller spots. He made it, but was fun to watch.

I highly recommend this campground. Plenty to do. Very peaceful. Beautiful area. very kid friendly. And, not too far away.

The worst storm came through last night. Made me a bit nervous. blink.gif

Again, great little campground.... very peaceful.

Here are some pics..

WOW! The pics are great! Wish that was closer to us. I take it that it is in VA.?
That would be a nice place for a quick trip and I love the way it is spread out. Thanks for the find!! etncc/well done.gif

Yes, it is in VA. We took 81 to 181 North. Took that to Gate City and then 23 North to the park/campground. It really is a nice place.

It is definitely beautiful. Would be a GREAT place for a group trip. There was one group camping there together and they were utilizing the huge space between 2 of the sites to play guitars and sing, etc.

the only hard thing would be getting sites the same weekend, I am hoping for more than 11 campers in the next group trips, a quick trip would be better

In some ways, it is better than Roan since they take reservations. Even if everyone ended up scattered, with the small size of the campground you are bound to be close to everyone. There is the group firepit which should be available as long as there is not any other large groups. They will be adding additional sites next year, not sure when they will be ready. As of now, there are
18 sites plus 3 tent sites.

Next time we go, I will go up on thursday. they do let people put cones down to save a site. However, people have been known to remove them and use the site themselves.

Wish we could go back this season, but imagine it wont be until next spring and/or summer once the pool is open. It is going to be really beautiful there in the next week or two with the leaves changing...
