check converter in your tail light of tow vehicle it sounds like its loose or bad
Dirtfisher- 07-24-2007
?????? converter in tail light? Does everyone have one? Sounds to me like if you lost all the lights that you lost your ground somewhere either on the popup or in the plug from tv to camper. With camper popped up and plugged into 120v do you have over head lights?
stacyb- 07-24-2007
we had lights when we had it plugged in at the campground
jasoncarder- 07-25-2007
I agree with Dirtfisher, it sounds like a bad ground. Most likely it's either a bad connection in your plug, or where the ground wire for your harness connects to your truck's frame.

If you have another trailer of any kind try driving it around with someone behind it. That way they can watch to see what the lights do. If they do fine then probably its the camping trailer. IF they act up with the other trailer then its probably something to do with the tow vehicle. Another thing to look for is to make sure your trailer has a ground wire from the vehicle to the camper. I have seen a lot that have the ground cut or non-existent. Another thing to check is the bulbs themselves. Sometimes they get corroded and will act up. I have to clean my utility trailer lights often. I heard you can put vaseline on the metal part of the bulbs. That suppose to keep it lubricated and stop corosion. I rewired every pice of my truck when I reworked it and had all kinds of problems before like you mentioned. It was due to what the others said, a loose ground.

it all started after Jeff had it installed on his new truck.. switched it over form the old truck. When we went to Myrlte we would only have brake lights but no turning lights then we would have them all. now nothing

Stacy, is the "it" you're referring to the brake controller? Or the actual wiring harness?
An easy way to diagnose the problem is to get a tester, like the one here:
Instead of buying the part above, you can go to Wally World and buy two parts: a 7-to-4 way adapter, and a 4-way tester. You should be able to buy both for under $15. I have both of them, and I can bring them to work tomorrow if you want to bring your truck by and I can test it for you.

Thanks Jason I will ask Jeff. He works till 3:30 and then tomorrow we have to take kenzie to Gymnastics.
I wonder if one of the wires in the connector is messed up
In that picture I have the whole set up on the left not the right one, we just have the big fat one.lol
oh i am talking about the wiring harness

While we're on the subject, I recommend that everyone purchase one of the 4-pole testers (and whatever adapter you need to fit a 4-way to your vehicle). You can buy the tester at Wally World for about $5. You simply plug the tester in your vehicle's tow plug, and turn on the headlights, brake, and each turn signal. The tester has 4 LED's that light up for each function (i.e. one LED lights up when the brakes are depressed). If an LED doesn't light, you know you've got a problem in your vehicle's wiring somewhere. I've used mine several times.
Also, as Willy mentioned, the contacts are subject to corrosion. It's a good idea to buy a tube of dielectric grease (go to Radio Shack or an auto parts store) and keep the grease on the contacts on your vehicle and trailer plugs to prevent corrosion.
Stacy, I have both the tester and adapter in my truck. PM me if you want to bring your truck over to my office and we'll check it out.

pm'ed you

You need to take the truck back to who ever installed your lights this last time and explain to them what is going on.... Sounds like a ground or a fuse.
stacyb- 07-26-2007
Thanks Rick they are gonna fit Jeff in first thing in the morning, they too said it sounded like a bad ground.. Nevr thought about calling A&L since it was late April when we had it put on.

Stacy, Did you get the light issue fixed? Just curious as to what the problem ended up being.
When we were at the beach, the last night we were there my brake lights on my truck wouldn't go off, I tried pulling fuses out, everything I could think of besides disconnecting the battery. We ended up going to an Advanced Auto, 7:30 PM, Friday night, no auto shops open, and they told me how to disconnect them so I ended up having to crawl up under the dash and unplug the brake switch assembly to get them to go off. We started home, with no brake lights or turn signals on truck or pu. I called the Chevy dealer in Myrtle Beach, and they couldn't even look at it until Monday, and there was no guarantee they would have parts, etc. so we started home. The brake light stayed on constantly so I had to stop every couple of hours to unplug them so the brake lenses could cool off. About half way home, I finally got them to stay where they were suppose to be so I had lights, but I still stopped every couple of hours to make sure they were still working. Turned out to be the dealership has replaced the brake light switch under recall last fall, but they didn't put it in correctly and it evidently fell out. I was not a happy camper.
