etncc/hello.gif! Since we are just starting to camp, I wanted to ask some of the "more experienced" campers if they have any recommendations for Dutch Ovens.

Do you prefer one brand over another?
What size do you find works best when cooking for 3 people? for 5 people?
Any suggestions for seasoning a dutch oven?

Any helpful hints you have would be appreciated.

Thanks and have a wonderful weekend! tongue.gif

buy a 12 inch pre seasoned one, believe me your house will smell much better if you don't have to season it at home. I think 12 inch is the normal one you see in recipes

We purchased our 12" 6 quart pre-seasoned Lodge Dutch Oven from Bass Pro Shop for $60.00.. which was the cheapest price we had found.

My DH has several cast iron skillets that he purchased a couple of years ago, unseasoned. When he first told me about the seasoning process and about not using soap when cleaning them after cooking.. I thought he was crazy. However, he has them seasoned just the way he likes them now.. and the no soap cleaning actually works.

Seasoning is an easy process.

Lodge has a great explanation of Seasoning and Care of your Dutch Oven which can be found at..

We only use Lodge brand cast iron cookware. The pre-seasoned kind is nice but you can do your own easily. I have a cookstove out of a larger camper that has an oven and it works great for seasoning the pans and dutch oven. I have it hooked up outside to a portable tank so the seasoning process don't stink up the house. smile.gif
My wife was ready to kick me after the first one I done at home. I have several recipes I can post if that is ok. I will try to look them up at home and leave a couple on here.
